 North Carolina Ranked Sixth Best State for Doctors in the U.S., Study Finds



A new study by WalletHub has ranked North Carolina as the sixth-best state for doctors in the nation. Released on Tuesday, the study evaluated 19 key metrics, including opportunity and competition, medical environment, physician salaries, malpractice payouts, and liability insurance costs.

According to the findings, North Carolina excels in several areas:

  • 2nd in medical environment

  • 2nd in malpractice award payout per capita

  • 14th in projected physicians per capita (by 2023)

  • 15th in annual physician wages

  • 17th in average monthly starting salary for physicians

  • 19th in annual malpractice liability insurance rate

  • 20th in state medical board punitiveness

  • 21st in hospitals per capita

  • 24th in opportunity and competition

With an overall score of 61.18, North Carolina ranks among the top states for medical professionals.

The study identified Montana as the best state for doctors, followed by Indiana, South Dakota, Iowa, and Utah in the top five.
